Furniture is the first thing most people shop for when planning a patio, and it’s usually the thing that should come last.
Sun mapping is the step that gets skipped most. A patio that looks perfect on the showroom floor can be unusable by 2 p.m. in July if nothing was planned for shade.
Wind matters almost as much and gets even less attention. Yards that funnel wind between a house and a fence line can make a dining area miserable on evenings that would otherwise be perfect.
Privacy is the third piece, and it’s the one that determines whether the space actually gets used or just gets photographed once.
The right order is boring but reliable: map the sun and wind, decide on shade and screening, get hardscaping right, and only then shop for furniture.
